About Bluetongue
Bluetongue is a viral disease that affects cattle, sheep, goats, and wild ruminants. Transmitted by an insect of the genus Culicoides, it manifests as intense inflammation, high fever, congestion and swelling of the tongue and face, and ulcerations and hemorrhages of the mucous membranes. The disease is caused by the bluetongue virus (BTV), a segmented RNA orbivirus of the Reoviridae family. Several serotypes have been identified.
Detection of antibodies to the bluetongue virus makes it possible to identify animals or herds that have been vaccinated or infected with the disease to prevent its spread.
