Calving time: BVD testing with IDEXX

Calving time is a key period on the calendar for the management of BVD on a farm and it is important you are ready to assist your customers.

Calving time is a key time in the management of BVD. All new introductions on to a farm need to be tested for BVD, and calves born on farm are one of the most important new introductions. This is why any farm with a previous or suspected BVD issue should be testing all calves. The new research from Dr. Scott McDougall discussed earlier in this newsletter means that the process of testing calves can be even easier. Testing all calves with the IDEXX Antigen ELISA on ear notch enables vets to accurately identify PI’s. A positive can be acted on swiftly and confidently with the peace of mind that the calf, no matter what the age is in fact a PI.

As a result of the research findings, we have updated our BVD Dairy Farm Framework to be consistent with the latest research developments. Our Farm Frameworks are intended to assist vets and farmers in working together to manage herd health. The Frameworks can be used to talk farmers through the process of testing and next steps dependent on the results.
